The Downtown Welcome Table in Asheville: Dine Out & Donate to a Worthy Local Cause or Just Stop By
Posted On Wednesday, February 19, 2014
It's wonderful to dine out in Asheville. It's even more wonderful to dine out in Asheville knowing that you're supporting a local establishment which supports its local community. It's also nice to know that you are able to help out, too. That's exactly what happens when you decide to dine at local Asheville restaurants which have partnered up with the Downtown Welcome Table.
The Downtown Welcome Table is a program of the Haywood Street Congregation which aims to serve a fabulous, free hot meal each Wednesday to hundreds of guests. A majority of these guests (about 75%) are homeless or live in poverty.
The local participating restaurants and their chefs take turns furnishing all of the food and preparing restaurant-quality meals for the event. Wanting to offer up a different kind of ambiance, the Downtown Welcome Table never had intentions of being a soup kitchen or feeding line. Its goal is to offer up the opportunity for a diverse community to gather together, share a nice meal, and to create a welcoming environment where conversations are had and friendships are formed.
The meals are served by a wait staff and accompanied by special touches like cloth table cloths, flowers on the tables, and lunches on china plates. The meals are family style and offer guests the chance to linger over a nice lunch, strike up conversation, and just enjoy the company of those around them.
The Downtown Welcome Table serves three meals each Wednesday at 10:30a.m., 11:15a.m. and noon. Reservations are not necessary.
The local Asheville restaurants that participate in and support the Downtown Welcome Table meals place envelopes on their establishments' tables about a month before it's their turn to serve, allowing restaurant patrons to donate as they are inclined to or able. The donations help to defray the cost of food. Any money collected that exceeds the cost of food is donated directly to the Welcome Table.
That's where you can help. By dining at these participating restaurants at their appointed times, you are helping to support the Asheville community and those in need. All you need to do to help out is place whatever monetary donation you are able to give in the envelope on your table at any point during your dining experience. It's that simple. (Of course, you are welcome to do more by volunteering your time or talents if you so desire. You can do that by contacting the Haywood Street Congregation directly.)
This month's participating restaurant is Rosetta's Kitchen in downtown Asheville. Come out to enjoy their vegetarian and vegan soul food through March 4 and leave your Downtown Welcome Table donation in the marked envelope at some point before you leave. Great food, great cause, great atmosphere. What more could you ask for?
We really hope you'll consider supporting Asheville's Downtown Welcome Table throughout the year, whether you're a resident or visitor. You can keep up-to-date on the participating restaurants for this event and where the donations are occurring (and when) by visiting ExploreAsheville.com's calendar of events page.
If you're vacationing in Asheville during this time or you're lucky enough to live here all year long, please let us know if you'll be stopping by Rosetta's Kitchen to help make this month's Welcome Table a success. We'd love to hear from you. Cheers to good food and good causes!
