Serena Film Based on the Novel by Asheville Author Ron Rash Set For Release in February 2015

Though filming wrapped up two years ago, Serena is finally being released in theaters worldwide this year and is being released online in the U.S. in February 2015. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, who teamed up in prior Oscar-nominated performances including American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook. The movie is based on the novel by Asheville's own Ron Rash.
The drama follows the story of timber baron George Pemberton and his wife Serena. The novel is set in Depression-era North Carolina in Western North Carolina's Haywood County (though the movie was actually filmed in the Czech Republic). Life gets a bit complicated for the couple after realizing that she cannot have children. Things get a little messy (and creepy) as Serena then becomes obsessed with her husband's illegitimate son. (We're not sure this movie has a happy ending, just sayin'.)
Like other popular movie stars, Jennifer Lawrence is no stranger to Western North Carolina. She spent time here during the filming of the blockbuster series The Hunger Games in 2011. She and the cast reportedly enjoyed their time off screen taking in the beautiful Western North Carolina views while zip-lining, whitewater rafting, and enjoying local Asheville favorites like Malaprop's Bookstore and The Southern in downtown.
Be sure to add some or all of these stops to your own Asheville vacation itinerary, and you'll be in good company.
