Pick an adventure

The mountains offer visitors all sorts of incredible adventures! If you are the type of person who loves the outdoors, then you will love Asheville in the Winter. Winter just lends itself to adrenaline pumping adventures. Here are three fun and exciting ways to enjoy Winter in and around the Asheville area.

Hit the Slopes

Whether you love skiing, snowboarding, or tubing there is something for everyone at the Cataloochee Ski Area! Located just east of Asheville, it boasts 18 skiing and snowboarding slopes (and trails). There are slopes perfect for every skill level, with the majority created for beginner skiers. If, however, you want an advanced trail, 17% of the trails cater to you! All of their slopes can be covered by their snow making machines, which means that all Winter long you will be able to enjoy perfectly manicured ski slopes. Right down the road from the ski area is Tube World where you and the family can have a blast sailing down the hills in a snow-tube! Click here for more information on the area, rates, and hours.

Another place to ski near Asheville is the Sapphire Valley Ski Area. This quaint ski area has a main run of 1600 feet and boasts a vertical drop of 200 feet. Never fear, if your kids have never skied before there is also a learning slope. Plus, if some in your party want a break from the vigorous skiing, there are multiple tubing lanes!

Ice Climbing

During icy winters, the land of waterfalls becomes a frozen wonderland, making North Carolina one of the best ice climbing destinations in the South! For novices, Fox Mountain Guides operates in the Pisgah National Forest and offers expert-led trips. North Carolina is the only state aside from New Hampshire where the climbing school offers ice-scaling expeditions.

For experts, when Wintry conditions prevail along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the ice-glazed bluffs and crags of Doughton Park (milepost 240), provide an abundance of climbing options, including tackling the rock ledges framing the iconic roadway (climbing is permitted when the parkway is closed to vehicles). In the Nantahala National Forest, just outside Cashiers, the soaring cliff faces of Whiteside Mountain appear glazed with ice year-round. However, when the cliffs truly are iced over, Whiteside is transformed into one of the East’s top destinations for unflappable, peak-bagging pros – with options like Starshine, an iconic 200-foot route.

Cross Country Skiing and Snow Shoeing

If you are looking to get outside and see the majestic mountains in all their Winter glory, snowshoeing or cross country skiing are great ways to do this! There are loads of great trails within a short drive from Asheville and your Asheville cabin. Looking for that perfect trail? Click here for more information

Some calmer adventures

Okay, so not everyone loves screaming down the slopes or hanging on for dear life ice climbing. No problem! There are still loads of fun things to do in Asheville that are perfect for those looking for a more calm adventure. Here are three fun things to check out in Asheville.

Visit Biltmore

For those of you who have never visited Biltmore, you are in for a real treat! Many folks think of Biltmore as simply a large mansion, but there is so much more. From a winery, to hiking trails, to incredible holiday decorations, there is truly something special about Biltmore in Winter. Just a short drive from any of our vacation rentals you’ll find fun and adventure at Biltmore Estate.

Brewery Scene

Looking to stay out of the cold and cozy up with a mug of one of Asheville’s famous beers? Asheville is often called Beer City USA- and for good reason! The local area is home to several incredible breweries. Why be out in the cold when you can watch the frost on a mug of ale? Check out one of the local breweries, have a taste, and take a tour- you’ll love our beer culture!

Enjoy the local art scene

Asheville is a veritable heaven for artists, music lovers, and anyone whole loves art in general. With local glass blowing companies, potters, live music, and theaters seemingly everywhere, it's hard to imagine a town with more to offer art fans than Asheville. We have so much to choose that from your hardest decision will be where to start your art adventure! We suggest the River Art District as your first stop.
