In addition to the beautiful lush greenery you can see this time of year in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Asheville itself also offers some wonderful opportunities to learn more about growing, planting, cultivating and even purchasing some of nature's most wonderful gifts.

Here are a few opportunities for gardeners, green thumbs, or anyone else with an interest and appreciation for what's growing in and around Asheville this time of year.

24th Annual Asheville Herb Festival
Asheville Herb FestivalThe Western North Carolina Farmers Market located on 570 Brevard Road in Asheville hosts the 24th Annual Asheville Herb Festival this weekend from Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5. The festival runs from 9a.m. to 5p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 10a.m to 3p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free!

Stop by on any of the days and experience what the Western North Carolina Chapter of the NC Herb Association has to offer. You'll find a wide variety of herbalists and herb businesses are represented. There are herb growers and vendors, natural gardening and landscaping specialist, as well as producers of herbal ointments, balms, soaps, teas, medicines and more. You'll also find information and experts on holistic treatments, gourmet cooking herbs and organic gardening information too.

Bring some friends and take advantage of this herb extravaganza. As the festival likes to say, "If it's herbs, it's here."

54th Annual Rhododendron & Azalea Flower Show
The North CRhododendron and Azalea Flower Show WNCarolina Arboretum hosts the 54th Annual Rhododendron and Flower Show on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. The show runs from noon to 5p.m. on Saturday and 11a.m. to 4p.m. on Sunday.

The American Rhododendron Society, Southeast Chapter, presents this annual judged event featuring hundreds of beautiful blooms. The arboretum is already home to the National Native Azalea Collection located along Bent Creek that represents almost every species native to the United States.

The NC Arboretum also has over 10 miles of hiking and biking trails. In addition to the exhibits, there's plenty to see and do here. Plan to make a day of it!

Biltmore Blooms During The Festival of Flowers
Don't forget that the Biltmore Estate's festival of flowers, Biltmore Blooms, is running now through May 31. The stunning floral displays include nearly 100,000 tulips with a special orchid display, along with other flowers that are currently in bloom.
