Bele Chere translates as beautiful living from an ancient Scottish dialect. The festival began in 1979 as a revitalization effort for the downtown business district. The merchants of Asheville at the time collaboratively worked to realize their vision for a more thriving downtown. The vision manifested itself in the form of a street festival named Bele Chere. Today, downtown Asheville thrives as a diverse and unique epicenter for restaurants, galleries, retailers, theaters, live music, art exhibits, museums, breweries, and so much more and the festival continues to celebrate all that Asheville has to offer.
