5 Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors and Social Distance at the Same Time

5 Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors and Social Distance at the Same Time

The new norm these days is all about social distancing. While many of us love a day outdoors with friends and family, now is a time to tap into that wonderful relaxing solitude that so many of us often crave. So as they say lets turn lemons into lemonade with these fun and relaxing outdoor activities that are both practical and safe in this time of social distancing.

Here are five great things you can do outdoors while maintaining your social distancing.

Fishing

Fishing is easy, cheap and doesn't require being close to anyone. In fact, one could argue the best fishing is found in the more secluded spots. Of course, with the French Broad River and other creeks in the area there is plenty of places to still fish while adhering to social distancing rules.

Cycling

Cycling like walking or running is great for your mental health, cardiovascular health and of course your immune system. Asheville has lots of great places to ride. Even a short thirty minute ride each day is a awesome way to get a little vitamin D and exercise in.

Gardening
There has a been a huge resurgence of gardening because of the coronavirus. No land? No worries there are lots of great ways to start gardening that require little or no space. Even a five gallon bucket can be the perfect place to start planting tomatoes and other yummy veggies.

Kayaking, Canoeing or SUP

All of these are things you can do solo or bay keeping your social distancing. With so many great rivers and lakes to choose from it is a wonder that you could ever run out of places to get out on the water. Remember to as always follow state laws and regulations around close boat ramps etc. You may have to get a little creative, but a little creativity might just let you find that unique place you've always wanted to kayak or SUP.

Walking and Hiking

Take a walk or a hike. Both of these activities are easy to do and easy to maintain social distancing. In fact many medical experts suggest getting out for a brisk walk. Walking and hiking have been linked to less depression, boosting your immune system, and of course, they are both great for burning off those extra calories from binge watching Netflix.

Please remember most state parks and many hiking trails are closed. Please check the latest state parks information to keep up to day with the most recent Coronavirus related closings and follow all state laws regarding park closures.
