In 1816, a man named Cornelius Hooker was deeded 50 acres of land from the sheriff of Buncombe County -- probably at an auction on the courthouse steps, in exchange for the unpaid taxes. Later the road that links Candler with the Newfound Valley in Leicester was named Hooker's Gap, a name that no doubt honored the stranger who "found new value" in this lovely, precipitous land that others had abandoned. According to 1820 census records, an aging Mr. Hooker lived in "Pole Creek" with his young wife and two young boys, but was gone by 1830.
